Following his discharge from the Army after World War I, J G Sweeney completed his residency at the Adelaide Hospital and then moved to Orroroo as a general practitioner where he joined a partnership with Dr Ray Last. He worked there until 1935 when he and his wife and family moved to Croydon, Adelaide where he resumed practice until he retired.
During World War II he served he served as a Reserve Medical Officer at Warradale Training Camp.
