During the action before the retirement of the regiment on 1 May, 1918, from Jisr ed Damie, he attended to the wounded under very heavy shell and machine gun fire, at great personal risk. When the regiment retired, he placed a severely wounded man on his horse and walked out to Black Hill, Jordan Valley, holding the man on the horse whilst climbing up and down almost impossible hills and wadis.'
