The Chest Clinic at the Adelaide Hospital included a ward for tuberculosis patients. This came about as a result of Cowan's visit to the U.S.A. in 1937 to investigate methods of control of tuberculosis- and to his determination to establish a centre for the control and treatment of the disease in South Australia.
