Short description
Re-enlisted while still serving in CMF Lighthorse (Riverton).
Commissioned as Captain and served in France from 29/3/1918. In Dec 1919 Captain Cairns applied for leave to to study medicine at Balliol College, Oxford, and was granted leave.
In April 1920 Captain Cairns applied to resigned from service to pursue postgraduate studies in medicine as a Rhodes Scholar in Balliol College, Oxford. 
Captain Cairns was demobilised on 31/5/1920.
Captain Cairns went on to serve in WW2 and made significant contribution in AAMC.
