M.C., Arts III (e) : Lieutenant, 55th Battn., A.I.F., France. Enlisting 24th June, 1915, and sailing 23rd December, arrived at Heliopolis in January, 1916, and served at Tel-el-Kebir, Desert March to Moascar, Ferry Post and Serapeum. Crossing to France, fought at Fleurbaix till wounded by bombs at Fromelles, 20th July, and evacuated to hospital at Southborough, Kent. Returning to battn. in August, served at Fleurbaix, Somme, Bapaume and Bullecourt and, after attending Officers'' Cadet Battn., Balliol College, Oxford, July-September, 1917, at Passchendaele, Messines, Villers-Bretonneux, August Advance, Bellicourt and until demobilisation. Awarded M.C. 8th March, 1919, and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Wallsend Public and Newcastle High Schools.
