Lionel W Hayward won a McCulloch Scholarship in 1896, while a student at Queen's College, North Adelaide, to St. Peter's College. In 1902 he was awarded the Davies Thomas Scholarship for obtaining First Class honours in the 4th Year Medical Examinations results. Dr L W Hayward did not serve overseas during World War I. He served on Home Service only. However, following the war he took up a position as General Practitioner in Loxton, where he was a strong advocate for the building of the Loxton Hospital. He also acted for a time as Medical Officer at the T.B. Soldiers' Home at Myrtle Bank.
