E C Black worked as a general practitioner after he returned from active service. He was also M.O. for the S.A. Railways, 1940-50,  lecturer at University of Adelaide, anaesthetist at R.A.H. and Adelaide Children's Hospital. 1929-71, member Royal Society (UK) and Anthropological Society (UK), R.G.S.S.A., life member A.M.A.
At 71, completed B.A. in Anthropology: participated in Australian Aboriginal archaeological and anthropological expeditions, surveys and research.
