M.C., B.E. : Captain, 17th Battn., A.I.F., France. Enlisting 8th May, 1915, after being mobilised with Australian Engineers 4th August, 1914, and sailing 20th January, 1916, as O.C. reinforcements, joined battn. at Armentieres 16th May. Was wounded at Loupart Wood 13th March, 1917, and again at Bullecourt 3rd May, when evacuated to Birmingham Military Hospital. Served as O.C. A Coy. from August until demobilisation, being on account of heavy casualty list, Acting Battn. Commander at Joncourt 3rd October. Promoted second-lieutenant, 24th September, 1915; lieutenant, 17th August, 1916; captain, 22nd June, 1917. Awarded M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches. Peter Nicol Russell Scholar. Early education at Watson's Bay Public and Fort St. High Schools. Later at Sydney Technical College. *  He went forward over the open under very heavy fire, and brought back most valuable information which enabled a difficult position to be cleared up.
