M.C., Med. I : Captain, 30th Battn., A.I.F., France; also A.N. and M.E.F., New Guinea. Enlisting 16th August, 1914, served in New Guinea as sergeant till 4th March, 1915. Was commissioned 1st December and, crossing to France, joined battn. at Fleurbaix 18th July, 1916, and fought at Fromelles, the Somme and elsewhere till demobilisation. Appointed Staff Trainee, 5th Division H.Q., 7th May, 1918, and was at 52nd Division H.Q. from 16th August to 25th October. Promoted lieutenant, 9th September, 19 16; captain, 3rd May, 1917. Awarded M.C. 1st January, 1918, and Mentioned in Despatches.
