D.S.O., M.B., Ch.M. : Lieutenant-Colonel, A.A.M.C., A.I.F., Egypt, Gallipoli, England and France. Enlisting 20th August, 1914, and sailing 25th September with 1st Australian Field Ambulance, served with it at Lemnos and Gallipoli from the Landing till the Evacuation. Was C.O. Australian and New Zealand Convalescent Hospital, Helouan, from May to July, 1916, and surgeon, No. 3 Australian General Hospital, Abbassia, from August to November and then, proceeding to England, D.A.D.M.S. 3rd Australian Division, Salisbury, until January, 1917. After short periods at No. 4 Convalescent and No. 5 Australian Auxiliary Hospitals, was C.O. 12th A.F.Amb. in France from 20th February until invalided to hospital in January, 1918, returning to Australia in May and being C.O. No. 21 A.G.H., Sydney, from June to November. Promoted major, 1st January, 1916; lieutenant-colonel, 20th February, 1917. Awarded D.S.O. 1st January, 1918, and Mentioned in Despatches twice.Demonstrator in Anatomy, 1919. Early education at Bowen House and Brisbane Grammar Schools. Later at St. Andrew's College.
