(42nd Battn.), tended the wounded in the open from 4 a.m. till 1 1 p.m.  During this period he was subjected to very heavy shelling from H.E. and gas, especially between the hours of 4 a.m. and 7 a.m., but he remained continuously at the Aid Post and worked with great devotion and courage throughout the day, although suffering from the effects of gas contracted almost at the commencement of the bombardment.  His rapidity in evacuating the wounded from the gassed area was no doubt responsible for the preservation of many valuable lives.
