D.S.O., B.E. : Major, 5th and 15th Field Coys., Engineers, A.I.F., Gallipoli and France. Enlisting 13th April, 1915, and sailing 9th August as second lieutenant with 3rd Reinforcements 18th Battn., landed at Gallipoli in September. Joining 5th Coy., was attached to 18th Battn. as Engineer Officer 10th November and left with rearguard at the Evacuation. Transferring to 15th Coy. in Egypt, 9th March, 1916, served with it in France until 5th April, 1917, when appointed to command 5th Coy., being wounded at Pozieres 3rd May. Returning to duty in September, acted in command of 1st Divisional Engineers in 1918 during the attack on Peronne and served until demobilisation. Promoted lieutenant, 1st February, and captain, 9th April, 1916; major, 5th April, 1917. Awarded D.S.O. 1st January, 1919, for work at Peronne and Mentioned in Despatches twice. A.M.F. : Major, 1st January, 1920; lieutenant-colonel, 15th December, 1922. Early education at St. John's, Darlinghurst, and Sydney Church of England Grammar Schools.
