Attached letter from LJ Pickington states "I was appointed from New Zealand, in 1915 by the Imperial Government as a German Interpreter in the militarily occupied territory of German Samoa, to assist the Receiver appointed to control and subsequently to liquidate German commercial enterprises in the territory. I occupied this position for two years before returning to New Zealand early in 1918 on account of ill-health. The work was done in a civil capacity and was not under the control of the occupying military forces."
