D.S.O., M.C., B.A., Law I : Major, 25th Battn., A.I.F., Gallipoli and France. Enlisting 15th February, 1915, and sailing 28th June as lieutenant, landed at Gallipoli n th September, serving there until wounded on first night of the Evacuation, 18th December. Crossing to France, fought at Armentieres in April and took charge of a composite raid (25th and 27th Battn. men) with success on Messines front 28th June, when severely wounded. In July, 1917, as second in command of battn., took charge alternately with C.O. during Passchendaele operations and from 17th August, 1918, was in charge for Somme Valley operation till severely wounded at Mont St. Quentin 2nd September, returning in May, 1919. Promoted captain, 25th May, 1916; major, 26th April, 1917. Awarded D.S.O. 1st January, 1919, and M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches twice. Chief Secretary, Mandated Territory of New Guinea. Early education at Grafton Public School. Later at Teachers' College * . . . Though wounded, he continued to lead with great dash. Several of the enemy were killed, and four prisoners taken. He showed great coolness and courage.
