M.B., Ch.M., B.Sc. : Gunner, 51st Battery, A.F.A., A.I.F., France; also A.A.M.C. Enlisting in A.A.M.C. and sailing in December, 1915, with hospital ship Karoola , served till its return in 1917. Then transferring to Artillery and sailing again, joined 51st Battery in France and served till demobilisation, though gassed at Villers-Bretonneux in April, 1918. Early education at Sydney Grammar School.

Served on the medical research advisory committee of the National Health & Medical Research Council (1954-57) & the advisory council of the School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine Uni of Sydney. Had Fellowships RACP(1950), Australian Academy of Science(1954), Aust. & NZ Assoc. for Advancement of Science (1957) and the Royal Entomological Society London(1958)
Served in WW2, Appointed Major in AAMC October 1939. The Mackerras Medal named in his honour awarded by Australian Entomological Society
