Enlisting 16th December, 1916, as captain and sailing 14th February, 1917, joined 21st Battn. in France 5th May, was attached to Staff, 3rd Infantry Brigade, 8th September and transferred to 1st Bde. 1st April, 1918, later returning for demobilisation. Appointed D.A.A.G. 4th November and Assistant Military Secretary A.I.F. 15th January, 1919. Service included Ypres, Messines, Somme, Amiens and Hindenburg Line. Promoted temporary major, 8th September, 1917; major, 8th September, 1918. Awarded D.S.O. 1st January, 1919, and Mentioned in Despatches. Member of S.U. Scouts, 1907-8. Early education at N.S.W. public schools.
