Enlisting 6th August, 1914, served as P.M.O. naval hospital ship Grantala at Rabaul and in Pacific till December, being demobilised in February, 1915. Joining R.N. in May, 1917, as staff-surgeon, became surgeon-lieutenant-commander, Harwich Force, North Sea, and surgeon commander on emergency list at the Armistice, and was demobilised at Bermudas. Early education at Hawthorn College, Melbourne.
