B.A., Law : Lieutenant, 54th Battn., A.I.F., Gallipoli and France. Enlisting in May, 1915, and sailing in June with 6th Reinforcements 2nd Battn., was promoted sergeant at Gallipoli and remained there till the Evacuation. Took part in Tel-el-Kebir March, transferred to 54th Battn. in January, 1916, and, crossing to France in June, served with it until wounded at Fleurbaix and evacuated to Birmingham. There selected for Officers Training School, Magdalen College, Oxford, and commissioned 27th April, 1917. Rejoining battn. in June, was returned in August to an Advanced Signalling School at Dunstable, England, where, the only Australian Officer and passing with distinction, he was promoted lieutenant, 22nd October. After being O.C. 5th Division Signalling School, rejoined battn. in June, 1918, and took part in engagements at Villers-Bretonneux and elsewhere till death. Killed in Action, Peronne, 1st September, 1918, and buried in British Military Cemetery hard by. Early education at Shellharbour and West Kempsey Public Schools. He did a thing one might have expected him to do, and that was he sacrificed himself in the most heroic way imaginable for the sake of his men.
