B.A. : Lieutenant, 1st Battn., A.I.F., Gallipoli and France. Enlisting 9th August, 1914, and sailing 18th October, was with battn. in Gallipoli from the Landing till the Evacuation, although wounded 8th August, 1915, and later invalided. In Egypt transferred to 1st Pioneer Battn. as sergeant, becoming company sergeant-major in France in April, 1916, and fought at 1st and 2nd Battles of Pozieres, Bullecourt, Lagnicourt, Passchendaele, Hazebrouck and Somme (1918), being gassed at Wyschaete. Then, having been regimental sergeant-major for 18 months, was sent to No. 5 Officer Cadet Battn., Cambridge, and commissioned in January, 1919, serving until demobilisation. Early education at Bathurst High School. Later at Teachers'' College.
