O.B.E., M.C., M.A. : Captain, 18th Battn. and 2nd Division H.Q., A.I.F., France and England. Enlisting 24th June, 1915, and sailing 9th August as O.C. 3rd Reinforcements, joined battn. in Egypt and, crossing with it to France, served at Pozieres, Somme, Hindenburg Line, Bullecourt, Ypres, Hangard Wood and elsewhere. In 1916 was adjutant from 8th January, 1917, staff-captain 7th Brigade, and in 1918-19 D.A.A.G. 2nd Division. On 7th April, 1918, transferred to A.I.F. H.Q. as Embarkation Staff Officer, Devonport, returning 19th February, 1920. Promoted captain, 27th May, 1916. Awarded O.B.E. 3rd June, 1919, and M.C. 17th January, 1917, and Mentioned in Despatches twice. Professor Anderson Medallist. Early education at Cleveland St. Superior Public School. Later at Teachers' College.
