A.F.C., B.E. : Flight Commander, R.F.C. and R.A.F., B.E.F., France and England. Enlisting in London 6th April, 1916, having sailed privately, was appointed second-lieutenant R.F.C. (Special Reserve), trained, then gazetted lieutenant and flying officer in July and posted to No. 20 Squadron on 2nd Army Front. Wounded while flying over Lille, 20th October, in an aerial combat gallantly fought, during which one hostile plane was driven off and another down. Evacuated to England and, being unfit for overseas service, became instructor at School of Aerial Gunnery, Hythe, from March, 1917, to May, 1919, when demobilised in England. Promoted flight-commander, 1st March, 1918; acting captain, 1st April. Awarded Air Force Cross 3rd June, 1919, and Italian Silver Medal, 27th May, 1917. Early education at Wellington College.
