Arts II (e) : Lieutenant, 14th Light Trench Mortar Battery, 54th and 53rd Battns., A.I.F., France. Enlisting 16th August, 1915, and sailing 20th December with 13th Reinforcements 2nd Battn., transferred to 54th on formation, 16th February, 1916, and took part in the Tel-el-Kebir to Ismailia March. Crossing to France with battn., was at Fromelles as corporal and later qualified as Instructor, Trench Mortar School. Served on Somme with 14th Battery, being promoted second-lieutenant On the Field 2nd September and wounded 1st December. Rejoining battn., was promoted lieutenant, 20th April, 1917, and congratulated for conduct at Bullecourt in May. Gassed at Villers-Bretonneux in April, 1918, and transferred to 53rd Battn., 11th October, serving until demobilisation. Early education at Sydney Grammar School.
