D.S.O., C. de G., B.E. : Lieutenant-Colonel, 4th and 33rd Battns., A.I.F., Gallipoli and France. Enlisting 13th August, 1914, and sailing 19th October as secondlieutenant 4th Battn., served at Anzac, where wounded in May, June and again on 6th August, 1915, at Lone Pine, whence evacuated to England and thence to Australia, arriving 14th January, 1916. Returning to duty in N.S.W. 16th February as Staff Captain 9th Infantry Brigade, was appointed second in command of 33rd Battn. on 1st May, sailing on 4th and arriving at Armentieres 13th November. In June, 1917, served at Messines as Divisional Liaison Officer, 3rd Aust., N.Z. and 4th Aust. Divisions. Attended Senior Officers School in England from October to December, became Commandant, 9th Infantry Brigade School 1st January, 1918, on returning to France, and, rejoining battn., was wounded at Neuve Eglise 3rd February. Appointed Commandant, Australian Corps School, 24th September and Sports Organizer 5th December. Was demobilised in London in August, 1919, and returned via U.S.A. in February, 1920. Promoted lieutenant, 1st February, 1915, and captain, 1st December; major, 1st May, 1916; lieutenant-colonel, 23rd September, 1918. Awarded D.S.O. 3rd June, 1918, and C. de G. avec palme in February, 1919, and Mentioned in Despatches three times.
