M.C., Econ. I : Lieutenant, 13th Battn., A.I.F., France. Enlisting 6th September, 1915, was promoted second-lieutenant 30th September, 1916, after being company sergeant-major in camps and joined battn. 9th July, 1917, in Messines sector, serving at Polygon Wood, Ypres and Passchendaele, where gassed 18th October. Appointed Intelligence Officer 4th Brigade, 26th March, 1918, and attached to 2nd U.S.A. Corps 24th September, after his own division had been withdrawn from the Line. Awarded M.C.* for work near St. Quentin and Mentioned in Despatches. Killed in Action, St. Quentin Canal, 2nd October, 1918. Early education at Grafton High School. * For his useful and gallant conduct during the operation near Le Verguier, north-west of St. Quentin, and against the Hindenburg outpost line, as brigade intelligence officer, on 18th September, 1918. Prior to the commencement of the operations, he carried out a daring reconnaissance along the whole brigade frontage, and definitely located the whereabouts of all the enemy posts and positions immeditaely on our front, and also supervised the laying of the ‘‘ jumping-off ‘‘ tapes for the brigade. During the progress of the fight he went forward with the assaulting troops, behaved most gallantly, and kept brigade constantly advised as to the progress of events.—London Gazette, 15th February, 1919.
