B.A.; B.Sc. (Syd. et Oxon.) : Lieutenant, 55th Battn., A.I.F., England and France. Enlisting 25th October, 1915, and sailing 23rd June, 1916, after being commissioned 6th January, was appointed Area Gas Officer Southern Command in January, 1917. Crossing to France, was wounded at Bayonvillers 10th August, 1918. Appointed Staff Captain Training Brigade, England, 16th January, 1919, returning 16th August, 1920. Granted scholarship by Department of Industrial and Scientific Research, England. Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Sydney High School. Later at Teachers' College, and New College, Oxford.
