Create a Database

By creating a new database you can precisely define the attributes (fields) you wish to record data in. Once defined, Heurist can export the XML files required to configure the FAIMS server and Table application.

To create a new database

Go to here for full instructions on creating a database.

  1. Log in using the URL supplied;  the login name is guest and the password guest.
  2. From Designer View choose Essentials | New Database to create a new database
  3. Select the standard Database option (the default).
  4. Provide a name for the database.
  5. Click Create Database.

Note. Creation of a new database can take up to half a minute.

  1. Navigate to the new database by clicking on the link Go to Administration page at the bottom of the page.

  1. Login to the new database (your login will be the same as the one you used to login to the current database).

In Designer View | Essentials | Record types / fields you will see something like the following pre-defined record types:

This shows the core template record types, with tabs for different themes.

Obtain Additional Recording Systems

Next, you may wish to acquire specific recording systems from the FAIMS community server.

To obtain additional recording systems

  1. Navigate to Designer View | Essentials | Import Structure
  2. Select the FAIMS Community Server (click the database icon left of FAIMS_Community_server in the list).

This is a Heurist database we are populating with additional recording forms to suit different approaches and legislative contexts.

Wait until the screen displays the list of record types in this database.

  1. Click on the record types (the second Import column) you wish to import (all required fields and terms associated with those record types will also be imported).

A message Import Successful should pop up after each one.

To Determine record types which have been loaded

  1. Click the Go To User View button at top left to return to User View
  2. Click on Database Summary link at the top of the navigation (lefthand) panel.

If there is no Navigation panel, use the Navigation menu or open the panel with the left-arrow icon below the Go To Designer View button

  1. The number of imported records displays.*
