His next of kin was his father, James Charles Berry. On his Attestation Form at the time of enlistment it was noted that W J Berry had suffered from symptoms of Consumption previously. His occupation was given as Civil Servant. He had served in the Cadets and Citizen Forces prior to enlistment. He was discharged before he could embark from Australia for overseas service.
It appears that Berry enlisted again after the outbreak of World War II, on 15 July 1941. His Service Number was 39735.
