He embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Wandilla on 15 June 1915  with the Australian Army Medical Corps.
He served in Egypt and Lemnos with the 3rd Australian General Hospital for about a year and went to England in September 1916. He was for a time at the 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital in Kent before being transferred to Infantry and training at Salisbury Plain.
 The last unit he served with was 3rd Australian General Hospital.
