After serving in France and surviving a period of illness, he was  posted to 1 Sanitary Section. After being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, he was posted back to 3 Australian General Hospital. Subsequently, he was declared unfit for further service and was invalided back to Australia in 1919.
