In 1915 he went to France , was later promoted to Major and posted as a Regimental Medical Officer to 24 Battalion in 1917. he was wounded in 1917 and evacuated to England. He returned to duty in April 1918 and was posted as second in command of 6 Fd Amb and went to France. He was Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the DSO.
