Their joint design for St Anne's Shrine, Bondi, received the 1935 Sulman award. Fowell was primarily responsible for the design of over forty churches in New South Wales and Victoria, including Catholic churches at North Sydney (1937), Parkes (1939) and Neutral Bay (1941). In enlarging (1934) St Charles's Church, Ryde, he was credited with the first significant architectural expression of Catholic liturgical change. He planned the altar to be free-standing, to join the congregation with the celebrant. His design (1941) for St Philip Neri's, Northbridge, was a further step in liturgical change and influenced later architects. From ADB entry</item1077756></item3><item18><item1077757>Joseph Charles</item1077757></item18><item20><item1077758>414</item1077758></item20><item72><item1077759>J.C.</item1077759></item72><item74><item1077760>10227</item1077760></item74><item79><item1077761><id>66073</id><type>24</type><title>Fowell J.C. : Relationships.Married 14 Aug 1919 - @ Kensington [ London England ]</title><hhash/></item1077761><item1077762><id>66076</id><type>24</type><title>Fowell J.C. : Relationships.Married 8 Dec 1939 - @ St Joseph's Catholic Church : Neutral Bay [ NSW Australia ]</title><hhash/></item1077762></item79><item83><item1077763><id>57316</id><type>31</type><title>Fowell, J.C. : Dominican Preparatory School</title><hhash/></item1077763><item1077764><id>57319</id><type>31</type><title>Fowell, J.C. : Fauconberge Grammar School</title><hhash/></item1077764></item83><item95><item1077765><id>66070</id><type>33</type><title>Fowell J.C. : Death 3 Jul 1970 @ Bayview [ NSW Australia ]</title><hhash/></item1077765></item95><item103><item1077766><id>66063</id><type>24</type><title>Fowell J.C. : Life.Birth 2 Aug 1891 - @ Albany [ WA Australia ]</title><hhash/></item1077766></item103><item112><item1077767>531</item1077767></item112><item134><item1077768>Not listed in the Book of Remembrance. On the outbreak of World War I, Fowell was in England and was refused entry to the navy (having lost the use of one eye); through persistence, he was eventually commissioned in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 20 December 1915. He served with the Auxiliary Motor Boat Patrol in the English Channel, the North Sea and the Mediterranean. From ADB</item1077768></item134><item144><item1077769><id>57328</id><type>5</type><title>Bio from Royal Australian Institute of Architects [ pdf ]</title><hhash/></item1077769></item144><item148><item1077770>531</item1077770></item148><item151><item1077771><id>57322</id><type>37</type><title>Fowell J.C. : Architect 1914 - Soper &amp; Fowell @ Hammersmith Bridge Rd [ London England ]</title><hhash/></item1077771><item1077772><id>57323</id><type>37</type><title>Fowell J.C. : Lecturer 1919 - 1926 University of Sydney @ Camperdown [ Sydney, NSW Australia ]</title><hhash/></item1077772><item1077773><id>66064</id><type>37</type><title>Fowell J.C. : Architect 1919 - Leslie Wilkinson's Practice @ Sydney [ NSW Australia ]</title><hhash/></item1077773><item1077774><id>66067</id><type>37</type><title>Fowell J.C. : Architect 1926 - 1939 H.E.Budden, Kenneth McConnel and Fowell @ Sydney [ NSW Australia ]</title><hhash/></item1077774></item151><item196><item1077775>4705</item1077775></item196><item259><item1077776><id>57324</id><type>69</type><title>Fowell, Joseph Charles : Royal Institute of British Architects, 1914</title><hhash/></item1077776><item1077777><id>57325</id><type>69</type><title>Fowell, Joseph Charles : Institute of Architects of NSW, 1920</title><hhash/></item1077777><item1077778><id>57326</id><type>69</type><title>Fowell, Joseph Charles : Board of Architects of NSW, 1941 - 1950</title><hhash/></item1077778><item1077779><id>57327</id><type>69</type><title>Fowell, Joseph Charles : Royal Australian Institute of Architects, 1931</title><hhash/></item1077779></item259><item263><item1077780>6095</item1077780></item263><item14027><item1077781>8928</item1077781></item14027><item14058><item1274395>8970</item1274395></item14058></details></record>
