Enlisting in August, 1914, and sailing 19th October as lieutenant, served in Egypt as Orderly Officer 1st Brigade, and at Gallipoli from the Landing to the Evacuation, being Staff Captain 1st Brigade from 1 6th May and attached to H.Q., Anzac Corps, for Staff Duties 29th November. Transferring to 56th Battn. on formation at Tel-el-Kebir, 13th February, 1916, was promoted major in June and served at Fromelles in July and as instructor at Etaples in November. Rejoining battn. 7th January, 1917, was in command of 54th Battn. for a few weeks, appointed Brigade Major 12th Brigade, 1st March, and later in the month sent as Brigade Major to H.Q. of newly formed 16th Brigade in England. When 6th Division was disbanded late in 1917, attended short staff course at Cambridge and, returning to France in December, served from January to March, 1918, on staffs of 15th and 14th Brigades. In April was appointed Brigade Major 3rd Division and later attached to 32nd U.S.A. Division, being demobilised in England. Awarded D.S.O. 1st January, 1919, M.C. 1st January, 1916, and Mentioned in Despatches. A.M.F.: Subaltern, N.S.W. Scottish Rifles. Director of Chemical Research, Indian Army Dept., Rawalpindi, 1929-.
