ParnellNote from Report Board of Faculties 29/1/1916 "...but his designs for a safety cath(sic) for bombs have been favourably considered by the Defence Authorities and forwarded to the War Office". UQ Archives file WQA S279 Commissioned in May 1918, he was appointed to Australian Corps headquarters as gas officer: his duties included defusing unexploded gas-shells. Lieutenant Parnell returned to Brisbane and was demobilized on 5 May 1919. He refunded £437 'excess salary' paid by the university, asking that it be used to help ex-servicemen to undertake tertiary studies.
