His name was venerated by troops in New Guinea for his courage in attending the wounded while under enemy fire. He had become an identity in Papua where he had been making a living for some years, partly as a medical officer, partly as a planter. He was 63 years of age when he died. Former RMO, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He was awarded the MC in Nov 1916. Training Depot, Moascar, and returned to Australia as S.M.O. troopship  Port Darwin  19th August, 1918. Promoted major, 29th January, 1917. Awarded M.C.* at Romani in August, 1916, and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Sydney Church of England Grammar School. *  He tended and dressed the wounded under heavy fire, displaying great courage and determination.
