On recovery served at No. 2 A.G.H., Wimereux, from 28th April, 1917, and with 3rd A.F.Amb. from 6th September, being R.M.O. 12th Battn. till 29th October and afterwards served as Administrator No. 3 A.G.H., Abbeville, returning for demobilisation. Awarded D.S.O.* and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Sydney Church of England Grammar School. Later at St. Paul's College. * "For his most conspicuous courage and devotion to duty with unremitting personal attention to casualties and the organisation of his post", he  was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in January 1918.
