Later was two months with A.F.C. at Gloucester and three months at No. 2 Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, until, demobilisation. Immediate Award of M.C.* in May, 1918, and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at The Scots College. Later at St. Andrew's. * On the morning of the 24th April, 1918, in the vicinity of Heilly, Captain Ewing George Thompson, R.M.O. (42nd Battn.), tended the wounded in the open from 4 a.m. till 1 1 p.m. During this period he was subjected to very heavy shelling from H.E. and gas, especially between the hours of 4 a.m. and 7 a.m., but he remained continuously at the Aid Post and worked with great devotion and courage throughout the day, although suffering from the effects of gas contracted almost at the commencement of the bombardment.
