On rejection in Sydney, sailed privately to England in March, 1916, and after testing at Thornycroft's, enlisted and was posted to the Flying Corps Officers Training School. Commissioned in February, 1917, crossed to France, 6th March, and was stationed at Vendora Aerodrome until returned to England 24th April to complete advanced course at Wye, Kent. Transferring to Lincoln in May, there broke record for learners in height -16,000 feet- and time. In June was promoted flying officer, invited to remain as instructor and recommended for fighting scout - a post of greatest danger and honour, serving till death. Killed in an aeroplane accident, while helping a fellow officer, Lincoln, 20th June 1917, and after cremation, buried in Lincoln (Newport) Cemetery. The Geoffrey Sulman Memorial Prize (1918) and Geoffrey Sulman Memorial Lectureship (1933), in Aeronautics were founded by his father and mother.
