Percy wrote and published guides to the study of Shakespeare plays set for schools, and other books as aids to students of English and later French. He continued writing these books up until his death in 1966,  which became widely used in schools as "crib" books.

Enlisting 9th May, 1915, and sailing in June, fought with 3rd Battn. at Gallipoli and, crossing to France, at Sailly, Fleurbaix, Pozieres and Ypres. Transferring to 24th in October, 1916, was invalided from Flers to England in December and, rejoining battn. in 1917, was at Ypres and Broodseinde until sent to Officers Training School at Cambridge, being commissioned in June, 1918. On return to unit, served at Hamel and elsewhere, following up German Retreat on the Somme, and until demobilisation. Awarded M.C.* and, Mentioned in Despatches. *  This officer displayed conspicuous courage and skill during the operations at Mont St. Quentin on the 1st September, 1918.
