Assistant Lecturer in Chemistry, Assaying, and Metallurgy, received a Commission in the AIF early in the War, but was not allowed to go on military service overseas as his expertise was required at home. His first war duty was approving chemical composition of all steel for shell work. After a year of that he left Australia as one of a draft of scientific workers. On arrival in Britain he was allocated to H.M.
