Enlisting 1st January, 1916, and sailing 20th February, served as Geophysics Officer in charge of The Mining School at Proven near Poperinghe, forming there a military physics laboratory. Sound waves through the earth were studied by means of the geophone, a new French invention, and instruments were designed by himself and other distinguished scientists. Officers and N.C.O.'s were efficiently trained in the use of these, occasional visits to Hill 60 via Hell Fire Corner being necessary. Our mines were thus saved from being exploded by camouflets (heavy charges fired underground without breaking the surface), the positions of the enemy's countermines located and we were enabled to drive long tunnels under German mines without being discovered. Twenty-two enormous mines were exploded on the morning of 7th June, 1917</item1096254></item134><item144><item1096255><id>36702</id><type>5</type><title>0001.jpg [ scanned_images/POLLOCK_James Arthur 1/ jpg 900128 ]</title><hhash/></item1096255><item1096256><id>36703</id><type>5</type><title>0001.jpg [ scanned_images/POLLOCK_James Arthur 2/ jpg 920603 ]</title><hhash/></item1096256><item1096257><id>36704</id><type>5</type><title>0002.jpg [ scanned_images/POLLOCK_James Arthur 2/ jpg 896512 ]</title><hhash/></item1096257><item1096258><id>36705</id><type>5</type><title>0003.jpg [ scanned_images/POLLOCK_James Arthur 2/ jpg 517290 ]</title><hhash/></item1096258><item1096259><id>36706</id><type>5</type><title>0001.jpg [ scanned_images/POLLOCK_James Arthur 3/ jpg 142668 ]</title><hhash/></item1096259><item1096260><id>36707</id><type>5</type><title>0001.jpg [ scanned_images/POLLOCK_James Arthur 4/ jpg 305921 ]</title><hhash/></item1096260><item1096261><id>36708</id><type>5</type><title>0002.jpg [ scanned_images/POLLOCK_James Arthur 4/ jpg 177141 ]</title><hhash/></item1096261><item1096262><id>36709</id><type>5</type><title>0001.jpg [ scanned_images/POLLOCK_James Arthur 5/ jpg 252807 ]</title><hhash/></item1096262><item1096263><id>36710</id><type>5</type><title>0001.jpg [ scanned_images/POLLOCK_James Arthur 6/ jpg 361633 ]</title><hhash/></item1096263><item1096264><id>36711</id><type>5</type><title>0002.jpg [ scanned_images/POLLOCK_James Arthur 6/ jpg 401728 ]</title><hhash/></item1096264><item1096265><id>36712</id><type>5</type><title>0003.jpg [ scanned_images/POLLOCK_James Arthur 6/ jpg 352575 ]</title><hhash/></item1096265><item1096266><id>36713</id><type>5</type><title>0004.jpg [ scanned_images/POLLOCK_James Arthur 6/ jpg 254412 ]</title><hhash/></item1096266><item1096267><id>36714</id><type>5</type><title>0001.jpg [ scanned_images/POLLOCK_James Arthur 7/ jpg 254094 ]</title><hhash/></item1096267><item1096268><id>36715</id><type>5</type><title>0002.jpg [ scanned_images/POLLOCK_James Arthur 7/ jpg 231093 ]</title><hhash/></item1096268><item1096269><id>36716</id><type>5</type><title>0001.jpg [ scanned_images/POLLOCK_James Arthur 8/ jpg 296782 ]</title><hhash/></item1096269><item1096270><id>36717</id><type>5</type><title>0002.jpg [ scanned_images/POLLOCK_James Arthur 8/ jpg 329514 ]</title><hhash/></item1096270></item144><item148><item1096271>531</item1096271></item148><item151><item1096272><id>62246</id><type>37</type><title>Pollock J.A. : Astronomical Assistant 1886 - Government Astronomer @ Sydney [ NSW Australia ]</title><hhash/></item1096272><item1096273><id>62249</id><type>37</type><title>Pollock J.A. : Professor of Physics 1899 - 1922 University of Sydney @ University of Sydney : Camperdown [ NSW Australia ]</title><hhash/></item1096273><item1096274><id>77453</id><type>37</type><title>Pollock J.A. : Demonstrator in Physics 1890 - University of Sydney @ University of Sydney : Camperdown [ NSW Australia ]</title><hhash/></item1096274></item151><item196><item1096275>4705</item1096275></item196><item257><item1096276>Many published works some with Prof R Threlfall &amp; O.Vonwiller, plus more.
