Sent to No. 4 Cadet School, Oxford, 29th December, commissioned 27th April, 1917, and rejoined battn. near Messines, being wounded n th June. Returning again to battn. in September, was evacuated to England 19th December through injury at Templeux-la-Foise and, rejoining once more 7th May, 1918, was wounded again near Villers-Bretonneux 6th July and a third time at Proyart 8th August but, remaining in France, served until demobilisation. Promoted second-lieutenant, 27th April, 1917, and lieutenant, 4th November. Awarded M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at South Australian Public Schools and St. Peter's College, Adelaide. * After a position had been occupied, an enemy machine gun commenced to enfilade the trench.
