Enlisting 20th January, 1916, and sailing 22nd August with 14th Reinforcements, joined battn. in December and served at Warlencourt, Bapaume, Lagnicourt and Bullecourt. Attended 1st Anzac Corps School at Aventie in July, 1917, was wounded at Ypres 20th September and evacuated to hospital and, returning to battn. in December, fought in all engagements including Villers-Bretonneux and Mont St. Quentin, till gassed at Joncourt 3rd October, 1918. Rejoining battn. after the Armistice, served until demobilisation. Promoted second-lieutenant, 1st July, 1917, and lieutenant, 14th October. Awarded M.C.* 1st February, 1919, and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Newington College. * During an advance in a thick fog at Warfusee, east of Amiens, on 8th August, 1918, he took charge of numerous parties of several units which had become detached, led them forward, and cleared the village. Later, when held by two machine-guns, which could not be located in the fog, he went forward alone, found them, and personally charged the position at the head of his men, and captured both guns and crews.5385555385653665653665755314705609589288970
