Was commissioned captain to 6th A.L.H. Regt. 1st November, 1914, and, sailing in December, gained majority in Egypt, crossed to Anzac in May, 1915, and remained continuously under shell fire till a fortnight before the Evacuation, when invalided to hospital and thence to Australia. Re-embarking 12th August, 1916, joined 2nd A.L.H. and transferred to 3rd Camel Regt. 3rd September, becoming O.C. Anzac Rest Camp 29th October and returning to 2nd on 20th February, 1917. Volunteering for Infantry, joined 25th Battn. in France 9th April and transferred to 54th on 21st June, becoming second in command and temporary O.C. After attending a Senior Officers School at Aldershot was promoted lieutenant-colonel, 3rd March, 1918, and appointed to command 56th Battn., but was severely gassed at Villers-Bretonneux 18th April and evacuated to hospital and thence to Australia, arriving 31st July. Died of Illness due to War Service, Melbourne, 28th March, 1919, and was buried in Waverley Cemetery. Early education at Sydney Church of England Grammar School. Later at St. Paul's College.
