Mobilised 4th August, 1914, was appointed lieutenant-colonel to command 1st Australian Field Ambulance on 19th and, sailing 20th October, served at Lemnos from 7th April, 1915, being present at the Anzac Landing. Was on hospital transport duties between Gallipoli and Egypt to 10th June and then sick at No. 2 Australian General Hospital, Ghezireh, until 10th July, when appointed Surgeon Specialist and second in command of that hospital. Was O.C. No. 1 A.G.H., Cairo, from 5th September, 1915, to 19th February, 1916, when transferred as O.C. No. 3 A.G.H., Abbassia, crossing with it to Brighton 5th October and Abbeville 16th April, 1917. On 25th December transferred to H.Q., London, remaining there on special duties till 1st November, 1919, returning in 1920. Promoted temporary colonel, 19th February, 1916; brevet colonel, 1st January, 1919. Made a C.M.G. 21st June, 1916, and C.B.E. in 1919. South African War : Lieutenant,  Promoted on the Field  and Mentioned in Despatches. Hon. Consulting Surgeon, Sydney and Royal North Shore Hospitals. Early education at Cholmondeley School, Highgate, King's School, Bruton, and King's School, Sherborne.
