Then returning to ambulance, remained with it until invalided to England in September and on recovery served at Orthopaedic Hospital, Southampton, until demobilisation. Promoted major, July, 1917. Awarded D.S.O.* at Passchendaele in October, 1917, and invested at Buckingham Palace 13th December, 1918. Mentioned in Despatches twice. Early education at King's College, Goulburn. * For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, tending the wounded continuously for ten hours under shell fire.
