Enlisting in April, 1915, and sailing in May, served on hospital ship  Karoola  and then in Egypt, returning as corporal on hospital ship in January, 1916. Transferring to 36th Battn. as private, re-embarked 13th May and on arrival in England was sent to Officers Training School, New College, Oxford, and commissioned to 34th Battn. in January, 1917. Fought at Armentieres and Messines where wounded 7th June and evacuated to hospital; then on recovery at Passchendaele, Somme, Villers-Bretonneux and till demobilisation, though slightly wounded in August, 1918. Promoted lieutenant 1st August, 1917. Awarded M.C.* when Signal Officer at Morlancourt and Mentioned in Despatches.
