Enlisting at Liverpool, England, 6th August, 1914, was with Liverpool R.E. (Territorials) at Fort Dunree, Ireland, until 5th December, being then commissioned in Artillery (Special Reserve) and attached for instruction to 5A Reserve Artillery Brigade, Athlone. Crossing to France in January, 1915, to 106th Battery, was wounded at Loos 10th October and again on the Somme in March, 1916, when evacuated to England. Seconded to R.F.C. 23rd October, and after training at Oxford and with No. 64 Reserve Squadron, joined No. 4 in France 14th July, 1917, as flying officer, being slightly wounded in aerial combats at Ypres 9th August and 10th October. Recrossing to England 26th March, 1918, attended Artillery and Infantry Co-operation School, R.A.F., at Winchester from 17th April, being in command from 31st July, and served until demobilisation, returning to Australia 28th October, 1919. Promoted lieutenant, 16th August, 1916 (seniority 23rd December, 1915); flying officer, 7th July, 1917; flight commander, 31st July, 1918; and captain, 1st August. Early education at Barker College.
