On return from hospital in England served at Polygon Wood, Westhoek, Broodeseinde Ridge, Messines, Villers-Bretonneux, the Grand Offensive of Fourth Army, Proyart, Peronne, where wounded 2nd September, 1918, and till demobilisation, returning as Adjutant, troopship Lancashire . Promoted lieutenant, 10th March, 1916, and captain On the Field , 6th June. Awarded M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches. Peter Nicol Russell Scholar. Educated at Greenwich Public and Fort St. High Schools. Later at Sydney Technical College. * He led his company through heavy artillery and machine gun fire almost to Peronne ramparts where he established a defensive position.
