Crossing to France in April, joined No. 2 Australian General Hospital, Wimereux, and in June 4th Australian Field Ambulance, becoming in turn R.M.O. 10th Artillery Brigade, 15th Battn. and 4th Art. Bde. until demobilisation, although wounded at Zonnebeke in October, 1917. Awarded M.C.* 2nd January, 1918, and Mentioned in Despatches twice. Early education at Sydney Grammar School. *  When the battalion was heavily shelled in a bivouac for two hours, he attended to the wounded with utter disregard of danger.
