Served in Hohenzollern Redoubt, Vermelles, Loos and Somme sectors, being wounded twice—at Bully-Grenay and on the Somme. After convalescence was a brigade transport officer in Scotland and later went to train as a gunner officer, intending to join the Regular Artillery.
